Question:
What to see in Israel? And is it worth taking a private tour guide?

I'm planning a trip to Israel this August. I was wondering what are the places of attraction there besides the well known Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa?
Which destinations require taking a private tour guide and where I can explore the place by myself?

It is very dangerous to be by yourself touring the country. Try to locate some tour agency to help you with your tour

Edit:

I have noticed that all Israelis who responded to your question see the country as safe as no other country is. This is because most of them are from East European background where people there have different measures for security.

I have been to Moscow, Warsaw, Budapest and Prague and I understand what security means there.

I'm unsure of hiring a private tour guide simply because I could not afford to, however, if you have the means I think it would be wise since who but a guide would know the best and most interesting sites to visit. Now to the other part of your question, I received this in an email just today.

In the new IMAX film Jerusalem, lush forests and emerald coastlines go up against miraculously jagged mountains and deserts all filmed in a soaring panorama. It's packed with the kind of visuals you can't help but describe with superlatives. Sure, it doesn't limit itself to just the city of Jerusalem--but with a country with vistas like these, it's hard to complain.

The video's focus is on architecture and natural wonders rather than people (or ethnic and religious conflict). At some points, it definitely sounds like an advertisement for tourism: the video spotlights Masada, the desert fortress where a group of Jews made their last stand against Rome, and the Old City of Jerusalem, with the Western Wall and Dome of the Rock.

If this is propaganda (and, one way or another, it is), it's still probably the most beautiful propaganda we're ever likely to see. Jerusalem is scheduled for a full-length release in 2013, but you can watch a 7-minute preview on YouTube right now.

Israel is a paradise for the tourist. The country is compact ,hospitable and modern. The tourist has an infinite range of places to visit depending on their preferences. There are tours operated by reputable travel organizations that can pick you up at most hotel and take you on tours either in the city where you are staying or around the country.

Private tour guides generally cost more but can cater for specific needs.

I would suggest you contact El Al airlines and consider flying with them and staying in hotels and go on tours according to your needs.

If you are interested in religious needs there are specific Christian tours, some even providing tours to denominations.Jewish tours would provide more time in Jerusalem.the tunnels around the Wall and Hezekiah's tunnel as mentioned in the Bible are two examples .The New Jewish Qaurter with Burnt House and the Rebuilt Synagogues and of course the Wall are is a must. You need no be obliged to visit it at 2am like President Putin, yesterday, but it's open to anybody at all times. If you are intersted in Archeology

the new Davids' City digs and the renowned Hebrew Museum are a must.

Everyone should perhaps visit the 10 most visited places like Masada and Acre with it's superb Crusader Halls and tunnels.Haifa is beautiful.Tel Aviv's beach and night life is world class.

Check it out and decide what you prefer to experience.Depending on the time available and how much you wish to spend will determine what you can see and how.

Israel is remarkable.Get the best out of your holiday.you will probably want to come back again, soon.

Enjoy Israel!!

Don't listen to the anti-Israel folk, who have an axe to grind.Israel is much safer than most countries.

I have visited and lived in Israel and have never felt insecure.I cannot say the same for Engand, the USA and any Middle Eastern, most European or any African country.

Israel is so reach with places to see that no-one can see everything. It really depends on what your interest are. Are you looking for religious experiences or night life or beaches or architecture & history? Getting a private tour guide is expansive. But if you can afford it you can make your tour completely tailored to your needs and interests. If you can afford it, go for it. Either way you are in for a treat. Enjoy.

there is so much to see, it would literally take months to see it all. i would wait until you get there and then decide. there are so many good group tours you can do, or you might feel confident to hire a car and see some of it yourself. You will be safe as long as you dont go to the arab villages or to the west bank by yourself.

the big cities are safe by yourself, but really more fun with a group of people. every hotel you stay in will be able to recommend good places to go and good tours to go on.

Don't go to Israel. Please, don't be blinded by your religious/political dogma. Save yourself from visiting this country because Iran could bomb Tel Aviv with its WMDs...
