The Talmud a record of rabbinic discussions pertaining to Jewish law, ethics, customs and history.

It does not speak negatively about non-Jews.

Anti-Talmud accusations have a long history dating back to the 13th century when the associates of the Inquisition attempted to defame Jews and their religion [see Yitzchak Baer, A History of Jews in Christian Spain, vol. I pp. 150-185]. The early material compiled by hateful preachers like Raymond Martini and Nicholas Donin remain the basis of all subsequent accusations against the Talmud. Some are true, most are false and based on quotations taken out of context, and some are total fabrications [see Baer, ch. 4 f. 54, 82 that it has been proven that Raymond Martini forged quotations]. On the Internet today we can find many of these old accusations being rehashed...

In distorting the normative meanings of rabbinic texts, anti-Talmud writers frequently remove passages from their textual and historical contexts. Even when they present their citations accurately, they judge the passages based on contemporary moral standards, ignoring the fact that the majority of these passages were composed close to two thousand years ago by people living in cultures radically different from our own. They are thus able to ignore Judaism's long history of social progress and paint it instead as a primitive and parochial religion.

Those who attack the Talmud frequently cite ancient rabbinic sources without noting subsequent developments in Jewish thought, and without making a good-faith effort to consult with contemporary Jewish authorities who can explain the role of these sources in normative Jewish thought and practice.

First of all, the Talmud is a volume of books ^^

The Talmud comes from the Hebrew root למד (l-m-d), which means to learn, or to teach. Therefore, the Talmud is a primer of sorts, to acquaint Jews with rabbinic teachings. I cannot recall any anti Gentile teachings, nor are there any hidden aspirations to undermine non-Jews. I think highly of the Talmud and its legacy to inspire Jews to think critically.

Claymore T, it doesn't say intercourse with a little girl is allowed. You're taking it out of context - it's describing a theoretical situation about intercourse with children and its implications. R. Meir and the Sages are discussing why it is worse for a small boy to have sex with a woman - because the girl is young, she is not sexually developed, thus intercourse with her would be like poking a finger into an eye. Whereas, when a young boy sleeps with a woman, it is as if she has been struck by a piece of wood (breaking the hymen). It does not condone child sexuality or pedophilia. Orthodox Judaism only allows sexual relations when the couple is married.

Paperback and Michael have given you well internet web sites. As you'll be able to see from a further poster, he has observed the nonsense internet web sites that mistranslate or outright lie approximately the Talmud. BTW - individual Talmud? Do I have a individual replica of the Constitution? Hell yeah! I've converted it and made up stuff! (sorry - I get ticked whilst men and women spout ignorant cr@p. I even get frustrated whilst peers electronic mail me with Internet spoof nonsense as truth! They usually determine their details first, now!) One almost always does now not begin with Talmud till they've a whole information of the Torah; it might be like beginning in to a sophisticated regulation magnificence with out commencing with Law one hundred and one and Constitutional Law. Good success for your reports. BTW - you probably have a Kindle, electronic mail me for main points. I bought the Talmud as an ebook! Great in case you journey!

The Talmud is a vast collection of thousands of pages in more than 20 volumes. If you picked pages at random and read them, you would probably have to go through at least a couple hundred before you found anything that refers to Gentiles AT ALL, much less in a negative way.

Much of what you read about negative statements comes from hate sites, of the caliber illustrated so brilliantly here by our erudite Talmudic scholar in residence, Rabbi Claymore Thomas III, who quotes from "Kelhubath", a newly discovered Tractate consisting entirely of page 11. Its textual integrity has been zealously guarded through many generations of computer-mediated copy-and-paste acts, and we can be absolutely certain that it is faithful to its original source, probably Stormfront.

The actual Talmudic quote that "Kelhubath" is a comically mangled version of states that if a three year old girl is raped, she is still considered a virgin - I see Cher has already explained this.

Just keep to a high standard of truth - insist on seeing the evidence in its actual context, and hearing all sides, and you'll be fine.

Most of it is discussions about technicalities of Jewish law - what constitutes "work" that is prohibited on the Sabbath, what stipulations are written in a marriage contract, how to resolve civil disputes, that sort of thing - in excruciating detail. It's unbelievably complicated, and nearly incomprehensible without a lot of training.

Not "many people", "many anti semites" or "many people who are too lazy to look up what the truth is despite having access to Google which makes it ridiculously easy".

So, it is false.

See http://talmud.faithweb.com/

Update:

Aaron wrote:

"Who says independent sources are wrong? You could easily argue that the sites we are told to look at, have been censored to stop us knowing the truth?"

And who says these so-called "independent sources" are right? And maybe anything you read about anything has been censored and thus you can never know the truth about anything?

My point is is that I highly doubt you think like that and that you, like anyone else, will tend to believe one source of information over another. The only question then is "are you right?"

So, know this. If the sources on the Internet that compile these lists of "Talmud quotes" are rife with antisemitism, and/or have inaccurate quotes, and/or quote things out of context, and/or make up quotes, and/or are compiled by people who can't even READ a page of the Talmud let alone understand one let alone be considered a scholar on the subject, then you know that such a source is bogus.

The link I provided that refutes these "Talmud Quotes lists" is written by someone who is actually a Talmudic scholar. At the very least, you should acknowledge that he knows the source material. If you are claiming he is deliberately censoring something, then the onus is upon you to prove that.

It contains things against those who worshiped Baal and other false gods that people sacrificed their children to and the antisemites deliberately mistranslated it to supposedly be about all non Jews.

Likewise that garbage about it allowing or permitting marriage to 3 year olds is pure lies and deliberate mistranslations.

If that were true then you'd be able to find religious Jews all over the world married to 3 year olds and

there is not a single case anywhere in the world.

As far as understanding Talmud in general, saying you can read any passage put of context and claiming it is easy to understand is like taking Grey's Anatomy and reading a passage from it and then claiming you understand it and then walk into a hospital claiming to be a doctor and trying to do surgery on someone.

How about reading from any law book and walking into a court as lawyer, hey you understood it right?

Those who pretend to care about the "bad things" they lie about finding in Talmud never go to the Lutherans who say all kinds of vicious things about Jews and attack and vilify them for what their 'holy writings' actually do say.

Chabad has a drug rehabilitation program which has helped many non Jews get off of drugs, free of charge.

Wow they must really hate non Jews, huh?

Then there are so many Imams who preach..well we ll know and see in the news the results of what they tell others in the name of what they claim to believe in.

the talmud is a series of commentaries on the central jewish text the torah as well as jewish law, ethics etc as one person has already said ...

its aim is to clarify points, words, phrases and meanings , practises etc that became obscure over the centuaries..

it became absorbed into judaism when jews began to scatter en masse due to perserction, invasions etc and risked becoming out of touch with their language or roots...

it is nothing more than that...

the idea that it is some secret book full of evil sayings about how non jews should be treated, killed , thought of etc is nothing more than archaic christian and nazi anti semitic propoganda...

and i guarantee that the people who say such stupid things about it have never read so much as a single word of it ...

us jews - unlike islam and christianity arent concerned with taking over the world, converting everyone or killing non believers ...

and as for our thoughts on it ... well what do you suppose christians think of the psalms, or muslims of the Hadiths???

i suggest you go and do some research about judaism, or even better read the talmud and torah for yourself before asking anal questions that are bordering on being insulting ....

All of that is false. It's antisemitic lies about Judaism started in the 1200's by Christians.

The lies & hate are that old. It's time for them to die!!

Take the quotes to a synagogue & look them up in a Talmud. Most are in sections that doesn't even exist. The rest are lines that don't exist. A couple are twisted around false statements of what the texts actually say.

Here's a good site:

http://talmud.faithweb.com/

==========================

Mircardo

The faithweb site explains how completely vague these statements are. More importantly it is NOT how they were studied by Jews since they were written!!! The conjecture is that they were slipped in as subtle allegory, but no on Jewish recognized it in all these years of study.

Jewish encylocopedia - I have found a lot of data in it to be false. The original was reputable but the online version- doesn't really state who is doing it nor why. A much better source is http://www.virtualjewishlibrary.org For pete sakes that site is referring to gospels in NT which is not used in Judaism at all.

Add: Excuse me - but that article is not in synagogues.

Scholarly research has improved a huge amount in 100 years. And regardless it's an article by a few people in an academic history arena. -- And HAS NOTHING to do with study of Talmud...which NEVER involves mentioning Jesus. Which is the point.

==================

Claymore is citing on of those garbage passages taken out of context.

There are many statements in Judaism & Talmud deploring rape. This one is saying that in a child, if raped she doesn't lose the status of virgin that was valued in those days. She continues to be considered legally innocent & her value doesn't diminish because of what was done to her.

The site referenced Come & Hear is one of the big antisemitic ones on the internet. It's based on the Nazi supporter Elizabeth Dillings works to vilify Jews pre-Holocaust. (Read through to find reference to her.)

While many of the accusations against the Talmud are taken out of context, or complete fabrications or credited to the Talmud when they are obscure medieval writings, somethings should be kept in mind.

The Talmud was written during an intense period of anti-semitism amongst Christians-many Jews took refuge in Babylon (where much of it was written). Some of the passages contain what some Talmud scholars (not all) think of as anti Christian writings. Balaan, a person who pops up now and then is at times thought to be an alias of Jesus (again I stress not every Jew believes this) What is perhaps most damning is the article on Jesus in the Jewish Encyclopedia, written over 100 years ago and found in most shuls. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=254&letter=J&search=Jesus#1019

Again I can not stress enough that not all Jews believe this, but some will never forget that many Nazis at the camps wore crosses-Himmler was a devote Catholic.

Christians who are educated, mainly those who went to a seminary, also study the Talmud, we do follow that Jewish guy and like to know some of his thought processes.

It may make some money but really it 's a small market for a book. I see no plays or theater to speak of and never a mini series. The sequels stretch over too much time.

No I say leave it to those that want it. Don't worry what others think so much..

I'll answer your question if you provide which Talmud you are using: The one Jews actually use or the antisemitic fake one published to attack Jews. Based on your question, I'll assume #2: I think it sucks.

Yeah, my mom keeps telling me how she read in their book that the all the non-jews are slaves and animals to the Jews.

I'm guessing it's the Talmud. But. I'll have to read it on my own (and not from anti-semetic sites)

Here is a teaser:

Kelhubath (11a-11b):

"When a grown-up man has had intercourse with a little girl...

It means this: When a GROWN UP MAN HAS INTERCOURSE WITH A LITTLE GIRL IT IS NOTHING, for when the girl is less than this THREE YEARS OLD it is as if one puts the finger into the eye tears come to the eye again and again, SO DOES VIRGINITY COME BACK TO THE LITTLE GIRL THREE YEARS OLD."

And here is the proof:

It's a badly written scrap book full of ways to cheat the gentile folk. Tommy
