Israeli students learn English and Arabic as second and third languages.

While most Israelis are fluent in English, very few of us graduate school with a fair Arabic.

I do not know what they teach in Palestinian schools, but I'm pretty sure they don't teach Hebrew; the Palestinians I had the chance to meet did not speak Hebrew.

I agree with you, learning each other's language would be a small yet important step towards peace.

Arabic is mandatory in Israeli schools from 7th to 10th grade, and optional after that. Also, Arab schools in Israel teach Hebrew as a second language. I don't believe Hebrew is taught in Palestinian schools in the West Bank and Gaza.

In Israel the official languages are Hebrew, English and Arabic. Hebrew and English are mandatory and Arabic is teach in many Jewish schools too.

In the Palestinian territories the official language is Arabic.

Israel Arabs use both Arabic and Hebrew and, of course English,

All traffic signs in Israel are written in Hebrew, English and Arabic.

It is not true that Orthodox Jews learn Arabic. Orthodox Jews use also some other antique languages, like Aramic.

Hebrew in Israeli side and Arabic in Falesteen side. Arabic or French is optional in Israeli schools. English is also mandatory in Israeli schools. May Falasteens know Hebrew because they live in Israel.

Would language be a top priority for peace

just right after 1967 war many Israelis liked arabic and even was no need to schools to learn arabic although many institutes held Arabic courses such as Martin poo-per in the hebrew university of Jerusalem British council and so on

but many jews learned many Arabic words

Arabs learned hebrew as well it was taught in schools but more they needed that to work

this can say went on with years and was developed

although through out these years there were some attacks of palestinian resistance in many cities

these years were called the easy occupation in which one small jeep with 3 or 4 soldiers used to control a vast area

Palestinians living in green line used to call this the west bank honey moon but this comes to end

the switch that happened from labor government to likud party and the treaty signing between Egypt and israel was a turning point in which a daily reminder of occupation faced every palestinian with what was newly "check points" it made a good reminder for the youth and here you must add having some universities in the west bank where the youth stayed in land .those enriched the inside movements

to your question although teaching languages was continuous by that time but the acts were getting outraged specially after Gaza incident in which an israeli driver drove his truck into Palestinians waiting to go to israel for work

since that date with Palestinian out rage israel took some measures"Rabin theory of breaking bones" so there was the act and the react

then was the hebron mosque incident in which an israeli doctor went to mosque shooting on pple in their dawn prayers and the reacts

since then there were no israeli stop for more measures to be taken

and a palestinian react

Currently, there are two official languages in Israel: Hebrew and Arabic. English, which has semi-official status, is used extensively at all levels of society.

Arab children in the Gaza and west bank study Arabic, as for why they don't learn Hebrew check out this site.

Hebrew is the official language of Israel so everyone learns that. The ulta-orthodox learn some Arabic because some of the Talmudic books they study are in Arabic.
