Depends on the age...



For infants, even if you buy a seat, it is of not much use since the baby can't sit yet on that seat, unless you are carrying a car seat certified for use on an airplane. Alternative is on the adult's lap with a special seat belt that attaches to the main seat belt.



Best option would be to get a bulkhead seat (the front row seat with extra space in front) which is usually reserved for handicapped people and those with small babies. If you get this seat, airline will (generally) provide with you a bassinet that fits on the wall on the space ahead of your seat.



For toddlers, you will need to buy a seat for them as you can't have them sit on your lap. And depending on where from-to you're flying, the fare could be roughly 50-60% of adult fare. In such a case you do not need a special arrangement.
